Waitemata Pro Am Recap

Hot sun, hot dogs and hot scoring was the agenda for the Bayleys Waitemata Pro Am, held at Waitemata Golf Club last Wednesday. With temperatures upwards of 30 degrees many of the 132-strong field of amateurs and professionals felt the heat and struggled, while others heated up and capitalised on the fantastic scoring conditions presented by Course Superintendent Denis Coleman and his team of greens staff.

Water was the key ingredient for many, with multiple supermarket trips required to restock the drinks stations scattered around the course and keep everyone hydrated. The team from Jack Daniels were also set up on the 10th hole, offering alternative refreshment options and hot dogs from the impressive barbeque trailer they towed down to the club for the day.

Even as energy levels waned in the heat, spirits remained high right through to the prizegiving in the clubhouse, with players greeted with a complimentary cocktail courtesy of Jack Daniels on arrival and Heineken and Devils Staircase wines flowing. A huge prize table supplied by The Clubroom and other sponsors ranged from golfing supplies to tv sets and speaker systems for those who battled the heat and came out on top.

Local knowledge must have counted on the day, with a team of Waitemata members and locals Stephen Close – local electrician, Alistair Davidson – owner of Takapuna Bar, and Tony Powell – owner of cafes at both the golf club and Ryman Village storming to victory, expertly guided by pro Oscar Cadenhead. These three have been great supporters of the club for many years, so it was only fitting that they should take out the club’s flagship event for the year. True to form their celebrations continued long into the evening, with the soundtrack provided by Carl Mose enjoyed by all.

The NZ PGA professional side of the draw saw Tae Koh, who plies his trade on the Korean Tour mix two eagles and six birdies with two bogeys for an eight under par round of 62 and a two-shot victory. B K Sohbani and Dongwoo Kang also made the most of the firm fairways and fast greens, finishing second and third on -6 and -4 respectively.

A huge thank you to principal sponsor Bayleys and the eleven businesses who provided hole sponsorships, the event simply would not have taken place without your support. Thank you also to the amateur and professional players who competed, and we hope that you enjoyed your day! 2019 saw a record 33 teams take part, and we are incredibly excited about the future of this event as it continues to grow in both scale and reputation.

The time has now come for the club to take a deep breath and prepare for a jam-packed year of club events and competitions.
