The Impact Direction: Why Angle of Attack Matters for Every Club You Swing

During a custom fitting at The Clubroom, our fitters look at a wide range of data points to find the ideal setup for your swing. While you don't need to know every single metric, understanding a few key measurements makes your time in the fitting bay far more valuable.

One of the most critical metrics we analyse is Angle of Attack (AoA) - and it directly influences the quality of every shot you hit.

Angle of Attack Explained Angle of Attack measures the vertical direction the clubhead is moving at the moment of impact, expressed in degrees relative to the ground:

  • Positive AoA: The clubhead is moving upward into the ball (an ascending strike).

  • Negative AoA: The clubhead is moving downward into the ball (a descending strike).

  • Neutral AoA: The clubhead is level with the ground through impact.

Why Angle of Attack Matters Different clubs in your bag demand completely different attack angles to perform properly:

  • The Driver: Needs a positive (upward) attack angle. Striking the ball on the upswing launches it high with low spin - the proven recipe for maximum carry and roll.

  • Irons and Wedges: Require a negative (downward) attack angle. Striking the ball first before taking a divot compresses the ball cleanly, generating the spin, launch, and stopping power needed to hold greens.

Dialling It In at The Clubroom Angle of attack is impossible to judge with the naked eye. Using our advanced launch monitor technology, we measure your delivery down to the degree.

If your attack angle is too steep or too shallow, strike consistency falls off quickly. By matching the right clubhead design, shaft profile, and loft configuration to your natural swing, we help balance your delivery - dialling in optimal trajectory, spin rates, and distance across the entire bag.
